warrantless wire-tapping...

I am absolutely amazed at the lack of outrage in our country over the warrantless wire taps that have been conducted by the bush administration. One would have to assume its irrelevance is caused by the willful ignorance/indifference by the American population. What's the big deal with these wiretaps anyways? The big deal is not so much that our government is spying on American citizens(which it has been doing for centuries), but that there is already a system in place to deal with these very types of situations. The Patriot Act, which the president has lauded so much over his tenure, is that program. As with its predecessor, FISA,the patriot act (which is actually an acronym for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) has its flaws, making it an extremely contentious document. However, the purpose of these laws are to legally circumnavigate the standard law enforcement model, such as for obtaining a warrant. A warrant can be issued for search and seizure several days after the actual event takes place, and without the person's knowledge of their being searched. There are al kinds of ways around standard practices in the name of fighting terrorism, but we'll skip that for now. My point is that there is no need to perform warrantless wire-tapping if a warrant can be easily obtained from a FISA judge (which have been approved in all but i believe 2 occurences out of several hundred). The systems are in place, so why is the president not using them?
